The Most Value For Your Money When Buying A Drone
The DJI Difference
What makes the DJI Spark drone one of the most valuable drones for the money?
DJI has been one of the leading innovators in the drone industry ever since the launch of the DJI Phantom 1 in 2013. If we look back to when the DJI Phantom 1 was released, we didn’t really know much about this new flying camera technology. The DJI Phantom drone was mainly used by professional photographers and cinematographers in the beginning, being slightly too expensive and confusing to use for average consumer. At that time, we had no idea how many different ways these flying camera platforms could add value to not only businesses, but our own personal lives. There are close to a thousand different things you can use a drone for, which is hard to imagine when you just think of it as a flying camera.
Fast forward to 2017, DJI has managed to pack almost all of the same technology of large commercial drones such as obstacle avoidance and active tracking into a palm sized drone. This little powerhouse goes by the name “Spark” which DJI just released this year at the reasonable price of $399 USD. Some of you may be staring at your screen right now saying “$399!? How is that reasonable?”. I will start by saying, most consumer drones you will see on the shelves at your local electronic stores or even bigger department stores are in the $30-$150 range. For $150 you’re getting a very cheap, bound-to-crash drone that is hard to control and quite frankly, not very much fun to fly after a few minutes. The footage from these drones look more like a seagull stole a flip phone that was recording video then drone footage. The battery doesn’t usually last more then 5 minutes and if you crash it, there is nowhere to have it fixed. This is where you have to start to think of VALUE more then the number on the price tag. When you think of something you are spending $150 or more on, you think of something that is well built and going to be around for a while. Not something that will be in the garbage the first day it comes out of the box. One of the most valuable things you pay for when you get any drone from DJI is the technology and software that runs the drone. DJI has done an amazing job designing their software. The layout of everything being as simple as possible while giving enough control to the more advanced users. They have a “Beginner Mode” that keeps the drone within a pre-set height and distance from the pilot to avoid any fly-aways and to mitigate the risk in the event of the pilot losing control or orientation of the drone. Think of it as an imaginary safety bubble around the pilot to keep the drone from ending up in the neighbor’s yard or up in some trees at the park. This safe zone paired with the integrated obstacle avoidance and smart return to home feature really makes the DJI Spark one of the safest and easiest drones to learn with.
Weighing in at just over a half pound with its built in HD camera and a smart battery inserted, you won’t get much more versatility then this. Not only does it come standard with a 12 mega-pixel camera shooting full 1080p HD at 30fps, it is mounted to a built in two axis gimbal. Giving you the ability to shoot the absolute smoothest drone shots out there even on a tighter budget. The DJI Spark’s built in mechanical gimbal is one of the most valuable parts of this compact drone. The gimbal is what keeps the camera steady and video smooth while flying, doubling as an amazing handheld gimbal when not flying. With battery life upwards of 16 minutes and distances of up to 1.2 miles, you will have plenty of time and reach to get all the shots you want.
This is all controlled by your smartphone, the optional flight controller, or hand controlled gestures. There is no other drone on the market that lets you fly without a controller as smooth as the DJI Spark. If simplicity mixed with the worlds best selfie device is what you want, look no further. With the tap of a button on the drone, the drone will gently take off from the palm of your hand. Once the drone is hovering in the air, you simply raise your hand up 90 degrees with your palm facing the camera allowing you to control its movement left and right. To land, you just make sure the camera is facing you and put your hand under the drone until it lands in your palm and the motors power down. If you’re looking to shoot more then just a selfie and more control is what you want, grab the flight controller and flying is a breeze. The small size of the DJI Spark (at 14.5 cm wide) is one of its most valuable advantages. This lets your fly through trees, under objects, and even working great indoors! Feeling nervous about flying near objects or trees? Have peace of mind while flying with the obstacle avoidance system turned on. This will help prevent your drone from flying into things as you navigate through the air. It may be small but its FAST! Capable of reaching speeds up to 50KPH (31MPH), this little drone can track fast moving objects with ease. Pick up a pair of DJI Goggles to use with the Spark for one of the most unique flying experiences around. Giving you the feeling of being the pilot of a fighter jet, flying the Spark in FPV mode is about as intense as it gets. When you’re all done flying and have some amazing aerial footage to show for it, you can put it all together in DJI’s simple editor that is part of the same app you fly with. Put all this together and you have the most powerful, easy to use palm sized drone, AND editing software that you can take anywhere. All of this while remaining one of the safest drones to fly on the market! DJI also has one of the best drone crash support plans. For only $59 you can get DJI Care Refresh which is a comprehensive accident warranty from DJI, allowing you up to 2 drone replacements per year at a small additional charge. If all this wasn’t enough, Now when we relate this all back to that $100 drone you were going to buy that where do you see the most VALUE?
